We had an action packed week--first it was somewhat calm, then mommy's old housemate and his family came to visit. They liked us--they said they'd finally found kids geekier than they are. We hung for the afternoon and evening, and then the next day went camping with a bunch of other friends in the North Cascades at a lake below Mt. Baker. The second day we were there we went up into North Cascade National Park and hiked up to an alpine snowfield--in August--and had a snowball fight. It was great. The next was shabbat, so it was very mellow around the campsite--so mellow in fact that the adults pretty much drove the kids away with singing and such. The funny that happened at the lake was that some people got married on the beach next to our campsite, and there were some really obnoxiously loud polluting speed boats on the lake that were so loud that the park rangers came and gave the guys on the boat a ticket--we all cheered when that happened because they were such bad citizens.

We all got back to our house and went to a really good chinese restaurant tonight called Bamboo Garden that has all kinds of beef and chicken and pork and seafood dishes that are all KOSHER. How? We don't know, but we suspect there was some vegetable matter involved. I (Willie) really liked the General Tso's chicken, even though there wasn't a shred of chicken in it. The other really good things from my POV were the Shanghai style rice cakes and the Oyster sauce noodles. Oysters? At a kosher restaurant? Something smells rotten in Denmark.

These are Bill and Helen's kids, Nat, Mim, Sam and Toby--it's hard to see Sam and Toby from this angle, but we'll post the photobooth shot next week.
Okay, here you can see Sam and Toby's eyeball and mouth, but not much more.

Harry and RaeAnn and Adar and Daveed also came along, and so did Tzachi and Lara and Noah and Aviv. Harry had this great filtering device that he put into the high country stream and it filtered out all the stuff that would give a guy the runs and the water tasted great.
This is the side of Mt. Baker--almost there.
Not before a sneak attack snowball barrage by Nat.
He doesn't seem to be looking--time for some payback.
Break time--two thumbs up.

From up in the high meadow, you can see right down the cascades. It was spectacular.

Sweaty and wet from snowballs and such, but I'm still kicking. What does this trail lead to anyway?
 A snowfield--what else?
The snowfield was huge, and the weirdest part was that there was water flowing underneath it. If you listened carefully, you could here it and in places there were holes where you could see the water moving underneath. Very disconcerting.

Oh, and did we mention snowball fights in August?
 Ready, aim, FIRE! SPLAT!
It was warm up there and incredibly bright. Most of us didn't have sunglasses so Papa decided that we should wait in the shade a little lower down while Bill, Nat, Harry, and RaeAnn completed the portion of the hike they wanted to go on. A short time later we all caught up with each other and went back down the mountain and had shabbat.
Before we left for camping, Bill and Nat were working on the poetry magnets on the fridge--this is what they came up with.

After we got home I showed Mim, Sam and Toby my seven levels of hell poster--they were pretty amused.
I probably should have rated my poster PG-13, but that wouldn't keep Sam and Toby away--they are even more relentless than Teddy. One difference though--they are allowed more rough-housing than we are.
For example--Toby started saying that all girls liked pink.
Here's Mim's reaction--hmmm, better not say she likes pink if we want to stay in one piece.
They also love all the comic books we love so we figured they'd like Gary Larsen's There's a Hair in my Dirt. They did, naturally.
See you later Bill and Helen and family--it was great having you!

Willie got home from camp (at long last for Teddy). He had a great time (in his words--we've got written proof), but he's happy to be home and sleeping in his own bed and eating regular food again instead of non-stop nutrigrain bars. There's still a little bit of summer left, but it's starting to feel like school is just around the corner. High School orientation is Wednesday, but school doesn't start til a couple of days after labor day.

We've been playing Magic, doing stuff with bears and bionicles, working on computer projects, seeing movies, staying up late, getting up late, and eating whatever isn't nailed down. Summer has finally arrived with temps in the low 80's and poor Papa is melting. He's putting his box fans in the windows and gel ice packs in the back of his shorts, so we really know it's summer. At least for another week or so.

These were my bunkmates on the last shabbat of camp. This is one of the rare occasions when we weren't bothering Oliver (our counselor) about his hot sisters. When we did bug him about his sisters he would jump on us or squirt us with water guns so we mostly only did it when he wasn't there. HA.
This is my friend Amital. Just friends. Really.
Up Rattlesnake mountain again--thank goodness this time it was foggy so we couldn't see the craggy perch we were sitting on. If we could, I may have lost my lunch.
Well here I am doing nothing. You'd think I had better things to do because Willie came back today, but you can be wrong once in a while.

It seems like weeks since we've posted--what's been happening? We got a week and a half of not much to do around the house before Willie went to camp. He has reported that sadly, he is in bunk B-12, but he did not report why it is sad. He did say that his counselors brought a table into the bunk to be used for poker, which sounds like a good thing. He also has been seen in a bunch of the spy photos and doesn't look too bad, so we're taking his camp notes with a bowl of salt. We do know that a ska singing guy named Matisyahu showed up again this year, and it was apparently some kind of big deal. Okie dokie.

Papa went away for 10 days for work, which is one of the reasons that the site was not updated, but there is a huge update for me, Teddy. Mommy and I went to Whole Foods (a place that is usually verboten to this family, but the cat was away...) and we went to the salad bar and the deli and got a piece of this and a slice of that and it added up to a wide variety of things which I tried, and some of them I actually liked. In particular, I like the cold cuts (roast beef, smoked turkey and ham), but didn't really like the cheese. Maybe it will be better on a sandwich, which I am also eating and making myself. I also kind of liked celery, but haven't had it since the test. I did not like lettuce or tomato. What it means is that I can make sandwiches for school which makes my parents happy.

Whipped cream--hooray! Hey, wait a minute--this isn't some condemned man last meal thing, is it?
Oh well, if it is, I'm going out with a bang and taking some clogged arteries with me.
Slurp, devour, glorb, munch, swallow. Repeat.
Now, a final little bit of reading over Teddy's shoulder, just to be extra annoying so he won't miss me while I'm at camp.
Miss him? Not on a bet. Not with my fabulous new ukelele! Who says I'm not interested in music?
Tip toe, through the tulips...
Willie, 2nd from left, in case you couldn't tell. We don't have any context--these are spy photos after all.
Context: gaga game, and Willie is still in. You'd think with those now super long legs he wouldn't be long for the gaga game, but he's got super long arms too, so perhaps it balances out.
More no context--apple shirted Willie on the far right, in case you couldn't tell.
Poker at camp--he better be counting cards!
Bonfire after Shabbat. Did you get any marshmallows?
I'll marshmallow you when I get a hold of you.
